I am unable to install SQL Server 2005 on Win XP SP2 box

I get to the point of starting the services and receive the following message after about 4 minutes of trying to start. I tried in Mixed Mode and Windows Authentication Mode. Message:

YOu need do have a look in the WIndows event log or in the log files of SQL Server mentioned. There is a problem starting the service, the message that you provided is just a generic one which doesn′t tell the specific error.

|||I can find nothing useful in the Windows event log and I guess I do not understand where the sql server log files are.|||For me its located in here:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\MSSQL\LOG

Could be something different for you depending on your installation.

|||What service account are you using for the service. It could be that the service account used doesn′t have the appropiate permissions to start up SQL Server. Change that (e.g. to Local System) and see if a manual startup comes up successfull.

I am having QUERY/ DATASET problem with SQL Reports.

I really need your help.

I have a web form which is having Drop Down box in which I have 2 selection 'P' and 'C'. Depending upon the selection I have to call the Dataset( If I can make it in code behind) or I can do it in one Complex query if you guys will help me.

Query should be like this.

select a.* , case when selection='P' then select p.column1 from ptable p

case when selection='C' then select c.column1 from ctable c

else a.column1

from atable a

where

acolumn2 = "USERINPUT"

but now the problem is in FROM and Where Clause.

when selection is 'P' then I have to include ptable in FROM Clause and in where clause I have to include two condition like (p.column1 = a.column1 and p.column2="USERINPUT1" or

if selection is 'C' then I have to include ctable in FROM clause and in where clause I have to include two different condition like (c.column1 = a.column1 and c.column2="USERINPUT")

So at once the Query will be any of one like below:

(1) some times this:

select a.* , case when selection='P' then select p.column1 from ptable p

case when selection='C' then select c.column1 from ctable c

else a.column1

from atable a, ptable p

where

a.column2 = "USERINPUT" and

p.column1 = a.column1 and p.column2="USERINPUT1"

(2) some times this:

Please let me know if you have any kind of confusion so I can clear this but if you got everything from my description please do help me to solve this. I am really struggling for this.

One way I was thinking to generate 3 dataset one(query or dataset) for 'P' , one for 'C' and one for else so I can get the input (selection) from the form and then decide in codebehind which dataset I have to make call so no need to write complex query. But this is my thought and I dont know how to make a call and everything either so please help me in this as well, if you like this solution .

Or try to solve the above query please.

The best way to do this is to construct the query dynamically as a string.

And the best way to do THAT -- IMHO -- is to have your query say only:

Code Snippet

=Code.GetSQL()

... now you can write a simple little VB function that evaluates your parameters and builds up the string, returning that string. You will find it a lot more comfortable to do it this way than doing it in the query window. If you have never written a custom function before, don't worry, you don't need to build a DLL for something like this -- just use the Code tab in the Report Properties dialog. This is the kind of code that IMHO really *deserves* to be embedded in a report, since it is specific to that report and that report's parameters.

If you have the ability to write stored procedures or table-valued functions in the database, that is another option. You can pass your parameters to the procedure or function, and have that code evaluate the parameters and provide the result. It really depends on two things: what your permissions are (for writing to the database) and what your relative comfort level is (for writing VB or writing T-SQL).

We are looking to buy a quad xeon box (ie 8 virtual processors). From
reading MS documentation it looks like W2K Server won't cut it - we
will need to move to W2K Advanced Server, correct?
Secondly, will Sql Server 7 support 8 virtual processors under such a
scenario?
Thirdly, based on our proposed box 4 x 2.0 GHz Xeon + 2 Gb RAM - for
more performance would you increase the processor speed (eg to 2.5GHz)
or add more RAM (eg to 4 Gb, or more)?

>|||SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition will only support 4 processors, and it can't
tell the difference between physical and logical processors. So, if you
want it to use all 8 logical processors on your proposed configuration
you'll want to purchase Enterprise Edition. In addition, 2GB of memory is
marginal for this sized configuration if you are really worried about
maximum performance. So you'll want more memory and Enterprise Edition to
support that additional memory. With 7.0 the best you can do for memory is
the /3GB switch. So the maximum useful memory on the system is going to be
4GB.
An alternative is to stick with Standard Edition and just have it use one
logical processor on each physical processor. Background tasks (Windows
processes, SQL Agent, etc.) will make some use of the additional logical
processors. Keep in mind that the additional logical processors don't
double system performance anyway, most of the data I've heard suggests
they'll give you about a 20% boost. And if you make heavy use of parallel
query then they might actually lead to some pathological conditions that
degrade performance. Finally, with Standard Edition you'd still be limited
to 2GB of memory, which in the long run is your most likely bottleneck.

hybrid replication (2000 and 2005)

Ok here is the deal...

We have our current dev box running SQL 2000 SP3
We have two new desktop boxes that we are using as a test, they are both running SQL 2005 SP1

The Dev Box = PUBLISHER
Desktop #1 = DISTRIBUTOR
Desktop #2 = SUBSCRIBER

All three SQL Servers are using the same Domain Account to run SQL Agent and SQL Server processes.

When I try to create a publication from the publisher, while running the sp_addpublication step through the UI (or thru SQL Query Analyzer) I get the following error message:

Msg 15404, Level 16, State 10, Procedure sp_grant_publication_access, Line 136
Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'crumpte', error code 0xffff0002.

So as a test I tried using our subscriber box as the publisher and had it point to the same distributor box to act as a distributor - and the publication was created fine.

It seems to be an issue using SQL 2k as the Publisher and SQL 2005 as the distributor. From the research that I have done, I found this KB article:

Which essentially says to install the latest SP for SQL 2k, which would be SP4, in the past I know there were issues with AWE memory allocation.

Q1. Has SP4 been hotfixed to resolve this AWE issue?
Q2. Has anyone here successfully setup replication from SQL 2k -> SQL 2005 using SQL 2005 as the distributor?

A little more info:

If I configure SQL 2k machine (publisher) to act as distributor I can create the publication without any problems, I can also create it when the Publisher is running SQL 2005 and uses a SQL 2005 server as its distributor.

The problem only exists when SQL 2k is the publisher and SQL 2005 is the distributor.|||I am still trying to troubleshoot this.

I was able to successfully create a publication from a desktop running SQL 2k, so at least I know it is possible, and I assume there is nothing wrong with my 2005 distribution server configuration.

Now when I try to repeat what I did on our Development server running SQL 2k, this is the error I get when trying to create the publication (script generated by SQL 2005):

Development Server is running SQL 2K SP3 and was just hotfixed to version 818 (so it would be running the same version as the working desktop mentioned earlier)|||a little more info...

I found the proc sp_addpublication - I scripted it out and ran it manually in SQL QA and now I get this error:

From what I can tell Remote Access (sp_option) is enabled on all servers so now I am really confused...|||ok this is REALLY REALLY strange - so I deleted the SQL Account it gave the error on - now it complains about another random SQL Account - I don't want to delete evey single SQL account to "fix" this problem - we certainly did not explicitly choose the accounts to authenticate against - did I miss a step somewhere?

What is really puzzling is how I am able to set this up just fine from a desktop running MSDE, it is only while trying to set this up on a Server installation do I get this error when trying to create the publication.|||I'm having the same issue when attempting to publish from a 2K box to a 2K5 distributor. Did this issue get resolved?
