I HATE Management Studio, how about you?

I really dislike the Management Studio in SQL Server 2005. Having tabs
is nice but everything else about it really sucks. What don't you like
about it? Maybe someone at M$ will read this and actually make some
changes -- for the better (sigh, I wish but I won't hold my breath).

For all the $$$$$ Microsoft spends you think they could do better. It
seems every 'new and improved' version has a worse UI than the one
before. I can hardly stand to use Visio any more. Word has so many
damned annoying features that I spend most of time trying to figure out
how to turn them off rather than getting real work down.

Living in the shadow of the evil empire I run into M$ dweebs all the
time. One of the biggest problems M$ has is arrogance. They 'know
better' than the whole user community.

Microsoft get a clue. Trying listening once in a while.Hi JJ,

It would help if you actually list things you dislike instead of just
ranting it doesn't do very much for your credibility, you simply come across
as probably one of those anti-MS whatever they do people - aka the linux
fanbregade.

I agree there are aspects of Management Studio that I dislike but those are
being addressed by Microsoft and believe those guys do listen to what WE as
the people who use the tools and product need.

So, lets try again - please list aspects of MAnagement Studio you dislike.

Management Studio is definitely not the part of SQL 2005 that I am most
impressed by. There are some nice improvements from Query Analyzer, but
there are too many features that have been dropped from the old tools.

If you go http://connect.microsoft.com/feedba...aspx?SiteID=68
you can submit suggestions for improvements. Such suggestions would
have to be a little more nuanced than "get a clue" to be meaningful. :-)
I would also encourage you to search among the existing bugs. There
are already plenty of entries for Mgmt Studio filed. And fact is,
MS have been listening. It looks that some of the issues will be
mended by SP2 already.

I dont see Server Management Studio on the XP with the Standard version

I have installed SQL 2005 Standard Edition on my Window XP many times and I dont see Server Management Studio.

Did I do something wrong?

Thanks.

you need to have Windows XP professional edition with SP2........refer the link,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910228 and if you have the necessary system requirements just go to tools folder and manually run the sqlrun_tools..........it will get installed........

|||

I didnt have to run as a separate step when I install the SQL Developer on XP SP2.

I do have XP SP2 on my PC and when I run the SQL 2005 Standard Edition, I didnt see the Server Management Studio.

So it is a separate step after a normal install?

Is it Performance Tool? Or a tool folder on the SQL 2005 STD Edition CD?

|||

there will be a tool folder may be you can insert the disk 2 and check it.....generally there will 2 folders in sql 2005 one is server and other is tool.........

|||

The default install ONLY installs the Server and network connections support.

To install SSMS, you need to put the media in again, and this time choose 'Client Tools' from the installation menu.

|||Management studio is not a performance tool, its just an replacement for Enterprise Manger

I do not have the option to create an Integration Service project in Business Management Studio

Hi,

I have installed the advanced toolkit for Microsoft Sql server 2005, with the SQL server Business Intelligence Development Studio but I don't have the option the create a Integration Service project. I only have the Report Server project option available.

Do I have to download something else to get it?

I do not have a SQL server instance installed on the machine I installed the toolkit on.

Thank you

What version of SQL Server do you have installed? You need Standard, Developer, or Enterprise.|||

Oh I see, I have the express edition.

I guess I'll get to play with that if we buy one of those editions some day

Thank you

|||Developer edition is $50, but cannot be used in a production environment.

I cant see my Procedure. Why? This is my first Stored Procedure.

Hello,

I created the "MyDb" database using Microsoft SQL 2005 Server Management Studio and I added the table "dbo.Surveys".

Then I right clicked on Store Procedures and created a new procedure.
When I close it I am asked to save it. I save it and gave the file a name.
However my stored procedure doesn't show in the Stored Procedures list.
I can only access it by loading the file (File > Open > File). Why?

When I open the File the Connect Window shows again.

I believe the procedure is created because I used CREATE.
When I execute it twice I got the message that there is already another procedure with that name so I change CREATE to ALTER.

Could you explain to me how to make my procedure visible in:
Databases/MyDb/Programmability/StoredProcedores

How to run it with dbo.Surveys table and see all the records that returns?

Thank You,
Miguel

My Stored Procedure code is:

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.Surveys_GetSurveyBySurveyName
-- Procedure Parameters
@.SurveyName nvarchar
AS
BEGIN
-- Prevent extra result sets from interfering with SELECT statements
SET NOCOUNT ON;

-- Procedure statements
SELECT m.SurveyName
FROM dbo.application_Surveys
WHERE @.SurveyName = u.SurveyName

IF ( @.@.ROWCOUNT = 0 ) -- Survey Name not found
RETURN -1
RETURN 0

END
GO

USE MyDb

GO

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.Surveys_GetSurveyBySurveyName
-- Procedure Parameters
@.SurveyName nvarchar
AS
BEGIN
-- Prevent extra result sets from interfering with SELECT statements
SET NOCOUNT ON;

-- Procedure statements
SELECT m.SurveyName
FROM dbo.application_Surveys
WHERE @.SurveyName = u.SurveyName

IF ( @.@.ROWCOUNT = 0 ) -- Survey Name not found
RETURN -1
RETURN 0

END
GO

this one can create on sp on my machine.

I can't Copy a database from Sql Server 2000 to 2005

Hi,
I can't Copy a database from Sql Server 2000 to 2005. I am using the Copy
Database option from Management menu. I want to transfer all tables, and all
stored procedures. I've tried everything for the past 3 days, and it didn't
work. I always get the same error.
Below is the error that I am getting. Can someone please show/tell me a
simple permission configuration on both servers that would actually work
when I try to do the Copy Database. This would restore my attitude towards
migrating to SQL Server 2005. I don't want to have to write any scripts or
programs for that either.
I've searched all over the internet for a similar problems answered, but
couldn't find anything useful. Can you please help, because I am ready to
toss that SQL Server 2005 into a dumpster, and stay with SQL Server 2000. I
am sure that there are hundreds of users like myself with the same problem.
Can someone please answer it really well once and for all finally? I don't
want to do any Detach or backup/restore methods, or write scripts (once
again). I just want to be able to use COPY database option in the Management
menu (while the database is running) to transfer this database from SQL
server 2000 to 2005, just as I could do it in SQL Server 2000.
Can you make up a simple example to explain it. Just one simple database on
Sql 2000 with the simplest permissions, needs to be transferred to 2005.
If you can actually help me, I will be really happy, and will send you a
nice box of really good chocolates

You're probably better off doing a full backup then restore to the new

Are you using the Attach/Detach option, or the SMO method? The latter is
completely hopeless. I think they fixed a couple of bugs in SP2, but I
still don't find it realiable, and I question that it should have ever
been included in the final release of SQL 2005.

You *may* get past this if you first do
sp_changedbowner 'sa'
before you expoer that database, but no promises.
Dave's suggestion that simple do a BACKUP/RESTORE is definitely worth
purusing. You will have to remap users with sp_change_users_login,
and change database owner to sa, and then to the real login, but
that is not a big deal.

I cant connect to sql server from a computer on my network

I am trying to log in to sql server on another desktop on my network.
When I open sql management studio I am able to find the server however
when I try to log in I am unable to connect. I have gone into the
configuration tool and enabled tcp/ip and named pipes remote
connections on the computer that is acting as the server but I still
get an error when I try to connect. How do I enable it so that I can
log onto the server on the other computer.npbaker1@.neo.rr.com wrote:

Hi
What is the error message you get?

1. Check whether the instance is running,
2. Try to connect to it locally,
3. Ping the other server from this machine to make sure you can reach it,
4. Try to connect to it using the IP address followed by the port number
after a comma
The messages or error messages from these tests should give you some clue.

I can't connect to SQL server 2005 with Management studio express

Hi all,

my server is on internet and can be accessed by sqlb2.webcontrolcenter.com to my hoster.

I subscribe for SQL server 2005

I try to connect to sql server 2005 via Management studio express and visual web developper express without success. i got this error below with both:

Cannot connect to sqlb2.webcontrolcenter.com

a connectionmwas successfully established with the server, but then an error occured during the login process. (Provider: TCP provider, error: 0 -The specified network name is no longer available )

(Microsoft sql server, error 64)

thank's for your help

These errors indicate that the connection between the client and SQL Server was broken for some reason while SQL Server was writing data to the client. You mention that you are accessing the server across the internet, so part of the issue may be routing/firewall rules/devices between you and your provider...if you are able to get through to the server, you may not be able to get data back from the server or vice-versa.

Can you telnet to the TCP port that SQL Server is listening on? i.e. telnet to the IP and port combination you are trying to connect to?

Additionally, ensure your SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

This is typcially more of a transport-level issue than SQL Server error (in this case, TCP for example)...
