I dont see Server Management Studio on the XP with the Standard version

I have installed SQL 2005 Standard Edition on my Window XP many times and I dont see Server Management Studio.

Did I do something wrong?

Thanks.

you need to have Windows XP professional edition with SP2........refer the link,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910228 and if you have the necessary system requirements just go to tools folder and manually run the sqlrun_tools..........it will get installed........

|||

I didnt have to run as a separate step when I install the SQL Developer on XP SP2.

I do have XP SP2 on my PC and when I run the SQL 2005 Standard Edition, I didnt see the Server Management Studio.

So it is a separate step after a normal install?

Is it Performance Tool? Or a tool folder on the SQL 2005 STD Edition CD?

|||

there will be a tool folder may be you can insert the disk 2 and check it.....generally there will 2 folders in sql 2005 one is server and other is tool.........

|||

The default install ONLY installs the Server and network connections support.

To install SSMS, you need to put the media in again, and this time choose 'Client Tools' from the installation menu.

|||Management studio is not a performance tool, its just an replacement for Enterprise Manger

I can't install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

I copied the error I received.

SQL Server Setup cannot install files to the compressed or encrypted folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\. To continue, make sure that your installation directories are not compressed or encrypted, or specify a different directory, and then run SQL Server Setup again.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\ is not an compressed or encrypted folder. I don't know what it is talking about. I just installed a fresh new copy of Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2.

There are two things to check:

1) Open up Windows Explorer, right-click on the main drive (c:) and select properties. On the General tab near the bottom you'll see a check box labeled "Compress drive to save disk space" make sure this is unchecked. Note: if you have more than one drive you want to check the drive where "%Program Files%" lives. This may not be a the C drive.

2) Next, while still in Windows Explorer go to the root of where %Program Files% lives. This should probably be c:\. Right-click on "Program Files" and select Properties. Click the "Advanced..." button down in the Attributes section. Make sure the two check boxes in the "Compress or Encrypt attributes" group box are un-checked.

Dan|||Thanks a lot! It worked perfectly. Big Smile|||I do not use any compression of encryption on the hard drive.

The 'C:\Program Files' directory is marked 'Read Only' ?

I have tried several times to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

(most recently from MSDN Disk 3097.1) I have tried to complete an

uninstall before each attempt.

I have installed: IIS and .NET Framework 2.0

I have also used ..\aspnet_regiis -r to register ASP.NET

I am, successfully, running Visual Studio 2005.

I do get the warning about Minimum Hardware Requirement, but can find

nothing in the detail requirements to exclude my PCs configuration.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I CANT INSTAL a Virtual Server of SQL 2000 Enterprise in Win2k3 Enterprise

I have a Cluster of Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition, When I try to install a
SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition the setup option of Virtual Server appear
unavailable I only choose between Local Install or Remote.
Thanks for your help
Hi Alejandro,
Here are few things I would try:
1) Make sure that you are using SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition setup CD
2) Make sure that there are no mdf, ldf or ndf files on your local disks on both nodes
3) Make sure that you do not have another "default" instance of SQL Server/MSDE on the other node.
After taking care of the above things, try the upgrade. If it fails, then cut and paste the sqlstp.log to your post.

1.
Reboot both nodes
They should come up with no error messages
2.
Check Event Viewer on each node and make sure there are no errors that
might interfere with the installation
3.
Check account permissions for the cluster account
Should be part of the Local Administrator group
4.
On each node, on the Start menu, click Run, and then type cmd in the
text box. Click OK.
Ping the Cluster IP Address from all nodes in the cluster; repeat for
each node
To verify that the private and public networks are communicating
properly
They should replay back

8.
Ping all Heartbead IP Addresses from all cluster nodes

9.
A domain account is available for SQL Server; check permissions for the
account; also the cluster administrator account must be created at the
domain level and must be an administrator of all nodes in the cluster
10.
All nodes have access to the installation path - we recommend to copy
the installation files locally on each node, especially for the services
pack and hotfix;
11.
In Cluster Administrator, for a two SQL Server instance installation,
create 4 groups and assign the correspondent resources to each group (such
as disk resources):
1.. MSDTC Group
2.. Cluster Group
3.. SQLServer Group1
4.. SQLServer Group2
12.
Using Cluster Administrator, test moving each group back and forth
between the two Nodes - check the owner
The owner should change
13.
While one Node owns all the groups, restart the other Node and check if
resource ownership was transferred to the other Node
The owner should change
14.
Check what resources belong to the Cluster Group
It should be: Cluster IP Address, Cluster Name, and Quorum Disk

I cant get the xml data type

I have just installed SQL server 2005 - Developer edition and the problem i get is: i dont have xml datatype available to me. I was able to use the xml datatye as long as i was using SQL server Express edition on a different machine. Please note that i have also applies SQL server 2005 SP-1 aswell but found no change in the datatypes available. I need urgent help in this regard.

During the installation i didnot install the reporting services as i did not need them.Has it something to do with it?XML datatype is avaiable for all SQL Server 2005 variation and service packs. Can you be more specific about "i dont have xml datatype available to me" ?|||

Well I meant that when i create a new table through design or query and type xml it generates and error message that xml datatyope is not defined. And here are the configuration of my machine:

OS: Windows XP - SP2

Hardware check: Intel Pentium 3 GHz processor 1 GB DDR RAM

I installed SQL server 2000 first and then SQL server 2005 dev. edition.

|||

Are you sure that you run the script against your SQL Server 2005 instance and not the SQL Server 2000 instance? What do you get if you say

select @.@.version

?

Thanks

I can't get SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition working

Hi all,

I can't get SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition working on my notebook with Windows Vista Business Edition. I installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition and then i ran SP2 for SQL Server EE.

But now when i a am trying to connect to any server from SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO i can't see any Server in Server Name list. When I click on Browse for more, I don't see any server. I am able to get Network servers.

While installing the SQL SERVER all the features were disabled as it is, then i went to advanced and selected all the options.

Any suggestions are apperiacted in advance.

Syed Abbas Naqvi

Sr. Software Developer.

Enterprise Edition (EE) requires a server operation system.

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/enterprise/sysreqs.mspx

Make sure that you installed SQL Server Express (sucessfully) by checking the Services running on the machine. Look for services name "SQL Server*"

Hi,

Thanks fo your reply.

But the question is that I want to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on My notebook which has

Microsoft Windows Vista Business.

I tried installing Microsoft SQL 2000 Server on my machine and it works fine while it is specified on Microsoft Website

that Microsoft SQL 2000 Server is not supported on Microsoft Windows Vista ( Of Any Edition ).

I installed SQL 2000 Server on my notebook when I got frustrated installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on my

notebook.

I am really frustrated, i should have not gone for windows vista, let the Windows Vista features go to hell.

I am not able configue .NET 1.1 or .NET 2.0 on my notebook.

I wish there was some magic which can fix all these issues.

Hope to read you soon...

Regards,

Syed Abbas Naqvi

Sr. Software Developer.

Once again, SQL Server EE will need a server OS to run and to be installed. if you have problems installing SQL Server on a vista system (non SQL-EE version) you might have a look here [1] to see what you will have to tweak to make it happen.

|||I think you have something wrong!
According to the document at:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
It says that I can install SQL Server 2005 - Enterprise Edition in Windows Vista (Ultimate - 32 Bit). But the note "Requires SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows Vista" makes me difficult to understand "how can I have SS2005 SP2". I had tried to install SS2005-Developer Edition, and upgraded it to SP2, after that, I tried to install SS2005-EE with hope to upgrade my DE into EE but nothing happened...
Please help me!
|||

I think folks are missing the point here...SQL Server Enterprise Edition can not be installed on Vista, period. Vista is a client operating system and we don't support installing Enterprise Edition on client operating systems. I'm pretty sure this is actually blocked in the installer. You will need to install a different edition if you want to install on Vista.

I cannot debug inside VS 2005 Developer Edition

Two questions...

1. I saw that you must have the Professional Edition and above to debug stored procedures. Is this available in the Developer Edition.

2. If #1 is okay, why do i not have the menu item, "Step Into Procedure" or whatever it's called?

Thank you,

Brian

What i installed was SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition, it came with a MSDN Professional Subscription. So i have the Professional Edition but i do not have the "Step Into Procedure" menu item when right-clicking a stored procedure within the Server Explorer? Maybe noteworthy here is that i did not install any of the languages, does that make a difference?

When i view debug options for Just-In-Time, i see a warning stating, "Another debugger has registered itself as the Just-In-Time debugger. To repair, enable Just-In-Time debugging or run Visual Studio repair." Could this be the reason for not having the ability to debug stored procedures?

Thanks,

Brian

I can't connect to my local database.mdf file

I have just upgraded to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2.

Now I can't connect to my local database.mdf file.

When trying to open or doubleclick or expand my .mdf file the following message pops up:

Generating user instances in SQL Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instance enabled' to generate user instances.

What is the solution for this problem?

hi,

by default, User Instances feature is disabled when you install a SQLExpress instance.. the Install Wizard provides an option to enable it at install time, but you can enable it via sp_configure execution as

EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced option', '1'; GO EXEC sp_configure 'user instances enabled','1'; GO RECONFIGURE GO EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced option', '0'; GO

(restart the SQLExpress service)

that can be executed both in SqlCmd.exe (command line tool) or in a SQL Server Management Studio Express query window (or even via an ADO/Ado.Net connection)..

you can have a look at all "configurable" options at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189631.aspx

The problem is still there?...

I right clicked in the query editor and hit Execute again after a while. It works now.

hi,

please tell me from where can i set that? or if i use specific syntax please send it to me,thank you.

|||try this:
alter table tbl_Categoriesalter column CatNamevarchar(100) COLLATE Arabic_CI_AI
Note the collation provided for this column. Collation is used by SQL Server to store data for different languages. Have a look at COLLATE or COLLATION in BOL. You can use
select *from ::fn_helpcollations()

to check all the installed collations on your server.

Hope this will help.

hi,

i still face the problem, by the way i finished from added my data to database in arabic language i made import from Excel file but the problem is when i make query on arabic data i recieved no row selected how is?,help me,thank you

First of all, you can run the alter table query I provided earlier any time whether your table contains data or not. One more thing is that you can use collation at the time of writing select query too, the syntax is below:

select *from <table name>where <column name>like'<value>' collate Arabic_CI_AI

Now the comparison will be made using the Arabic_CI_AI collate for this select. As I've told earlier there are so many collates to choose from ( even for Arabic ), which differ in some way or another. Choose the collate you want to use and either alter the table permanently or at the time of selecting the values. Just go and have a look at BOL for COLLATE.

Hope this will help

i altered my table with Arabic_CI_AI after that i write your syntax but still no new :S,thanks

How can I reach all the possible collation options for Arabic?

This is my SQL statement which returns NO VALUES:

SELECT ArtistID, Name
FROM dbo.Artist
WHERE (Name LIKE '%?%' COLLATE Arabic_CI_AI)

I also tried

SELECT ArtistID, Name
FROM dbo.Artist
WHERE (Name LIKE '%?%' COLLATE Arabic_CL_AS)

as was suggested in one of the forum replies, but it gives an error message saying :
"Invalid Collation" with an error source: " .NetSqlClient Data Provider"

Thanks.

i acn't login to a sql server with Database Engine Tuning Advisor

I'm trying to connect an instance (sql2005 standard edition) with the Database Engine Tuning Advisor (DETA), but it always fails.
I get this message:
"Failed to open a new connection.Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning
(exit code: -1073741819).(DTAClient)"

The msdb database is exist on this server. What can i do?I compared the msdb database to an another db (where this feature is works) and I found some missing objects:
DTA% tables(22) and sp_DTA% store procedures(63)

I don't remember any option where I can set this objects (exist or not) and I didn't see any error when I installed this server.
?|||

This is most likely a security issue. The login account you are using from the tuning advisor doesn't have sufficient privileges to MSDB. The account you use for database tuning should have read/write access to msdb, because the DTA stores session information there (see BOL topic Considerations for Using Database Engine Tuning Advisor).

HyperThreading with SQL Server 2000

Hi:

I have a server with 4 processors with hyperthreading, so my Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition see 8 processors. I have installed SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and see 8 processors. The question is : if i install SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, how many processors see and use 4 or 8 ?

I know that i have to license only 4 processors according to the Microsoft License, but, really, how many processors see and use?.sqlserver will see all logical processsors (i.e. 8) but you should limit the paralellism to only to 4 (physical) to avoid possible internal para blocking (i.e. max degree of paralellism).

Leaving HT on is a good thing but it's useless to allow all 8 schedulers to work on a single query.|||Why did you enable hyper-threading?

Even M$ admits that you probably are better off w/out it|||Because my server have this property by default then the operating system use this, i did think that use that was better for perfomance...i'm confuse.|||Rob is an MVP and does a lot of sql server work

http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=55887

Also, it's a lot of excess for a 10-20% (10 more likely) Perf gain...Plus you have a quad...I don't even think they list a quad

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/322385|||Please take a look at Kevin's article , Bare Metal Tuning (will require sqlmag sub to access the article).
http://www.windowsitpro.com/SQLServer/Article/ArticleID/46492/SQLServer_46492.html

In general, HT does give a boost in SQL perf (20-30% gain according to the TPC-C he and a Performance Engr from HP did). If you have an app that pushes L1/L2 cache heavily, turning off HT would only then be a good idea.
