I don't see my databases. How to recover from this
I have a lot of databases in my server, but the point
here is that I cannot see none. When Enterprise Manager
starts there's an error appearing:
snap-in failed to initialize
Name: Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager
CLSID: 00100100-1816-11D0-8EF5-00AA0062C58F
After this error, in the Enterprise Manager my databases
have disappeared.
Is there a way to recover from this? I really need
somebody's help, please.
Thanks in advance.

i can't save my DTS
i've created a DTS with enterprise manager directly on the server, and
everything was ok for some days.
But i've modified this DTS on a distant computer and since i've done it,
i've an access denied message when i try to save or execute any dts on the
server. I've acces to everyting else on the entreprise manager (i'm using
a system administrators account) but the only thing i can do with the DTS
is deleting.
On the other side, i can do everything on the DTS on the distant computer.
pleaaaaaaaaaaase...help meeee !!!See if you can run the same commands that the DTS package is executing from
OSQL or ISQL.
Access Denied maybe permissions with the filesystem rather than DTS or SQL.
You can run FileMon.exe from www.sysinternals.com to see where the
permission problem is.
Hope this helps.

I can't restore my master DB
Prod is running SQL 2k Enterprise SP2 (obviously with some fix)
Staging is running SQL 2k Enterprise SP2
I can't get the versions to match, thus I can't restore any of my backed up databases to the staging server from the production one.
Server: Msg 3168, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The backup of the system database on device g:\DBBACKUP\Master.bak cannot be restored because it was created by a different version of the server (134218407) than this server (134218262).
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
I would determine what versions you are running on both, and then upgrade
staging to match production. Is this possible?

i can't login to sqlserver with a username and a password but works with NT integrated security
i have created a username and a password in sqlserver 2000 from logins in Enterprise manager
and i permit him to the database i need to connect to ..
and i check all server roles for that user and i make sqlserver authentication for him with a password and then i goto the udl file to connect to that database using that user it fails !!
"login failed for that user 'myusername' reason not associated with a trusted sqlserver connection"
while i use NT integrated security it works well
so how can i connect to sqlserver using a username and a password
thanks in advance
Hi,
You need to make sure that SQL Server Authentication is set to "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode". You do this by right clicking on the server name in Management Studio, selecting properties and then clicking on the Security page.
By default SQL Server is installed to use Windows Authentication mode only.
Cheers
Jeff

I CANT INSTAL a Virtual Server of SQL 2000 Enterprise in Win2k3 Enterprise
SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition the setup option of Virtual Server appear
unavailable I only choose between Local Install or Remote.
Thanks for your help
Hi Alejandro,
Here are few things I would try:
1) Make sure that you are using SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition setup CD
2) Make sure that there are no mdf, ldf or ndf files on your local disks on both nodes
3) Make sure that you do not have another "default" instance of SQL Server/MSDE on the other node.
After taking care of the above things, try the upgrade. If it fails, then cut and paste the sqlstp.log to your post.

Expected Results
Results
1.
Reboot both nodes
They should come up with no error messages
2.
Check Event Viewer on each node and make sure there are no errors that
might interfere with the installation
3.
Check account permissions for the cluster account
Should be part of the Local Administrator group
4.
On each node, on the Start menu, click Run, and then type cmd in the
text box. Click OK.
Ping the Cluster IP Address from all nodes in the cluster; repeat for
each node
To verify that the private and public networks are communicating
properly
They should replay back
5.
Ping the cluster IP address from a computer not in the cluster
They should replay back
6.
Ping the Cluster Network Name from all nodes in the cluster
They should replay back
7.
Ping the Cluster Network Name from a computer not in the cluster
They should replay back
8.
Ping all Heartbead IP Addresses from all cluster nodes
They should replay back
9.
A domain account is available for SQL Server; check permissions for the
account; also the cluster administrator account must be created at the
domain level and must be an administrator of all nodes in the cluster
10.
All nodes have access to the installation path - we recommend to copy
the installation files locally on each node, especially for the services
pack and hotfix;
11.
In Cluster Administrator, for a two SQL Server instance installation,
create 4 groups and assign the correspondent resources to each group (such
as disk resources):
1.. MSDTC Group
2.. Cluster Group
3.. SQLServer Group1
4.. SQLServer Group2
12.
Using Cluster Administrator, test moving each group back and forth
between the two Nodes - check the owner
The owner should change
13.
While one Node owns all the groups, restart the other Node and check if
resource ownership was transferred to the other Node
The owner should change
14.
Check what resources belong to the Cluster Group
It should be: Cluster IP Address, Cluster Name, and Quorum Disk
15.
MSDTC Group
MS DTC should be in its own group; follow the following article to
configure MSDTC: 301600 - How to configure Microsoft Distributed Transaction
Coordinator on a Windows Server 2003 Cluster detailed in Appendix B

I can't get SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition working
Hi all,
I can't get SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition working on my notebook with Windows Vista Business Edition. I installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition and then i ran SP2 for SQL Server EE.
But now when i a am trying to connect to any server from SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO i can't see any Server in Server Name list. When I click on Browse for more, I don't see any server. I am able to get Network servers.
While installing the SQL SERVER all the features were disabled as it is, then i went to advanced and selected all the options.
Any suggestions are apperiacted in advance.

Enterprise Edition (EE) requires a server operation system.

Make sure that you installed SQL Server Express (sucessfully) by checking the Services running on the machine. Look for services name "SQL Server*"

|||Hi,
Thanks fo your reply.
But the question is that I want to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on My notebook which has
Microsoft Windows Vista Business.
I tried installing Microsoft SQL 2000 Server on my machine and it works fine while it is specified on Microsoft Website
that Microsoft SQL 2000 Server is not supported on Microsoft Windows Vista ( Of Any Edition ).
I installed SQL 2000 Server on my notebook when I got frustrated installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on my
notebook.
I am really frustrated, i should have not gone for windows vista, let the Windows Vista features go to hell.
I am not able configue .NET 1.1 or .NET 2.0 on my notebook.
I wish there was some magic which can fix all these issues.
Hope to read you soon...

|||Once again, SQL Server EE will need a server OS to run and to be installed. if you have problems installing SQL Server on a vista system (non SQL-EE version) you might have a look here [1] to see what you will have to tweak to make it happen.

|||I think you have something wrong!According to the document at:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
It says that I can install SQL Server 2005 - Enterprise Edition in Windows Vista (Ultimate - 32 Bit). But the note "Requires SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows Vista" makes me difficult to understand "how can I have SS2005 SP2". I had tried to install SS2005-Developer Edition, and upgraded it to SP2, after that, I tried to install SS2005-EE with hope to upgrade my DE into EE but nothing happened...
Please help me!
|||
I think folks are missing the point here...SQL Server Enterprise Edition can not be installed on Vista, period. Vista is a client operating system and we don't support installing Enterprise Edition on client operating systems. I'm pretty sure this is actually blocked in the installer. You will need to install a different edition if you want to install on Vista.

sqlI can't disable publications
tried stopping, then deleting individual subscriptions before trying to
delete the publication, but EM would hang after each one. I gave it 30
minutes to complete, but it never came back. Now I have phantom
subscriptions on the remote machines, even though the distributor shows
none.
I've always been able to follow the above steps before. I don't know
why it suddenly went bonkers.
I've tried rebooting the server (this is a production system, so I'm
hesitant to do that again), and that had no effect. I don't have
physical access to the machine.
Is there a manual way to safely disable publishing and then use the
wizard (or manually) to enable it again?
BTW, this is merge replication.
try running sp_droppublication manually from QA.
Either that or run sp_who2 to figure out which process is blocking.
Sometimes you get better results if you issue a master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'net
stop SQLServerAgent' before attempting the drop.

I cant connect to my SQL database using Enterprise Manager :(
I am trying to solve this problem for the past 1.5 weeks and it is driving me crazy :(
I can't connect to my SQL database using Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, Visual Studio 2003 .NET or a .aspx that I created for testing.. it runs perfectly on my domain but it doesnt work on my computer, on the browser I get this message: SQL Server unavailable or access denied. It is the same message I get when I try connecting to my db using EM, QA, VS.NET etc :(
I can ping my sql domain, so I know I have access to it and it is working.. I can successfully connect to my personal SQL server running on my machine. (SQL Server Personal Edition running on Windows XP )
I tried doing everything I could,
I already selected TCP/IP as my client only protocol;
I tried installing the lastest MDAC (v 2.8);
I tried every other port on my TCP/IP client setup like 14333 or 11433 or 11143 etc;
I tried every other port on the alias I set for my sql address;
I tried downloading the evaluation version of MS SQL2000 and updating it to SP3;
I tried reinstalling several times my MS SQL2000 (I use the personal edition on my windows XP) and updating it to SP3;
I tried connecting to my sql address domain and directly to its IP;
And I tried a lot more resolutions that I can't remember right now, but it didn't work :(
I've been searching all forums/google etc looking for someone with my problem but I still didnt, everyone who had a problem connecting to their DB using EM or QA resolved it by doing "this or that", I did exactly the same "this or that" on my computer/config and it didn't resolve my problem. :(
What am I doing wrong? I can't connect to my database from my personal computer :(
I have never used enterprise manager before, so I don't know if it is a problem on my personal computer or on my sql server address on internet.. Is there anyway to find a free test ms sql database with like 1mb just to try and find out if I can connect to a sql database at all using EM or if the problem is here on my computer?
Thanks in advance for any help,
XandeHI ,
I had similar problems , are you going through a firewall? also did you try typing in the ip addy instead of the server name?
Burner|||Hello,
Yes, I tried typing the IP and I already opened the port 1433 on my router DSL.. :(
Thanks|||HI ,
do you guys use port 1433, try port 2433.Do you guys connect through a firewall if yes type in the server on which the firewall resides IP...and port 2433 and see ...

I cannot get Enterprise Manager to remotely connect!
However, using that same username and password, I cannot get connected using Enterprise Manager SQL registration method so I can change database settings.
The error message I get says: SQL server does not exist or access denied (Conection Open(connect)).
The SQL server does exist (because it finds it in the server list). For some reason I am getting access denied. The server is running a mixed authentication mode.if sql2000 is running on win2003,it must be fix by sql service pack .
then you can settle the problem.|||I am trying to connec to a machine running win2000.|||Are you registering by machine name or ip address ? Can you ping the server ? When you say remotely - please provide more details on this ?|||Remotely means outside the firewall. I have also tried to connect inside the firewall. Inside the firewall, the server is listed by name in the available servers list when registering a new server. It just won't connect. Outside the firewall I am typing the IP in and nothing. SQL server is running on the webserver I am working off of.|||Can you ping the sql server (from inside or outside) ? Did you try using the ip address when registering from inside/outside ? What does your client network utility show as far as enabled protocols ? What are the errors you receive inside/outside ? Are you using the same machine to connect in both example (inside/outside) ?|||Also, since a firewall is involved - validate that the sql port is open. The default/normal port is 1433, but might have been changed by the sa/dba for security.

HyperThreading with SQL Server 2000
I have a server with 4 processors with hyperthreading, so my Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition see 8 processors. I have installed SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and see 8 processors. The question is : if i install SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition, how many processors see and use 4 or 8 ?
I know that i have to license only 4 processors according to the Microsoft License, but,really, how many processors see and use?.sqlserver will see all logical processsors (i.e. 8) but you should limit the paralellism to only to 4 (physical) to avoid possible internal para blocking (i.e. max degree of paralellism).
Leaving HT on is a good thing but it's useless to allow all 8 schedulers to work on a single query.|||Why did you enable hyper-threading?
Even M$ admits that you probably are better off w/out it|||Because my server have this property by default then the operating system use this, i did think that use that was better for perfomance...i'm confuse. :confused:|||Rob is an MVP and does a lot of sql server work
http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=55887
Also, it's a lot of excess for a 10-20% (10 more likely) Perf gain...Plus you have a quad...I don't even think they list a quad
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/322385|||Please take a look at Kevin's article , Bare Metal Tuning (will require sqlmag sub to access the article).
http://www.windowsitpro.com/SQLServer/Article/ArticleID/46492/SQLServer_46492.html
In general, HT does give a boost in SQL perf (20-30% gain according to the TPC-C he and a Performance Engr from HP did). If you have an app that pushes L1/L2 cache heavily, turning off HT would only then be a good idea.
HYPER-THREADING configuration hints
We have a SQL 2000 ENTERPRISE, running on four Hyper-threaded processors, 8
GIG of Memory, Windows SERVER 2003, connected to EMC.
Does anybody have any general rules for configuration for such a server
(it's going to be OLTP) Should we set the affinity to only use the "REAL"
processors. Should we allow all processors to be used for parallelism or
just the "REAL" ones. Anything else we need to consider?
Right now during load testing we are seeing a lot of CXPACKET waits.
Thanks
Paul
Try setting your MAXDOP to use just 4 processors first and see how that
goes.
